Growing up, the fall season meant cooler weather, dad watching football, and mom’s homemade apple cider.

The smell of the apples, oranges and spices simmering on the stove meant that Thanksgiving was near and pumpkins were being scattered around the house.

I hope to carry on similar traditions with our kids, so Saturday morning Jordan and I took the boys to the pumpkin patch. We brought home our favorite pumpkins and carved the largest one. While the boys were designing his face and carving, a (slightly) scary movie played in the background as I made my mom’s cider. I hope these are memories the boys think back fondly of like I know I will.

This warm drink is perfect in cool weather, on Thanksgiving morning, or when making pumpkin jack’o’lanterns!

To Make:

In a large sauce pan, bring apple juice, sliced apple and orange, and spices to a low boil.
Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally until the flavors combine, about 5-10 minutes. Serve warm!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups Cold-pressed or fresh-pressed, unfiltered apple juice
  • 1 crisp apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • ยฝ tsp cardamom
  • ยผ tsp allspice
  • ยผ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • pinch of cloves

Instructions

  1. In a large sauce pan, bring apple juice, sliced apple and orange, and spices to a low boil.
  2. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally until the flavors combine, about 5-10 minutes. Serve warm!
  3. *This makes 2-3 servings, if serving Thanksgiving morning you may want to double or triple the recipe!*
