Chocolate Protein Shake

I have a deep love affair with chocolate. In fact, our whole family has a bit of a chocolate addiction. It makes perfect sense why I started making this chocolate protein shake on repeat during my first pregnancy. I wanted something that satisfied my chocolate cravings while also nourishing my growing baby.

Years later, it’s still one of my favorite breakfasts and afternoon snacks. It’s thick, creamy, naturally sweetened, and tastes like a chocolate milkshake, yet it’s made with satiating ingredients that keep me full for hours. Even kids love it!

One of my favorite things about this chocolate protein shake is that it’s naturally sweetened with fruit and rich in fiber, healthy fats, and protein to help keep blood sugar more stable. Whether you’re looking for an easy breakfast, post-workout snack, or healthy afternoon treat, this recipe comes together in just a few minutes.

Health Benefits of Cacao

Cacao isn’t just delicious—it’s also one of my favorite superfoods. Unlike heavily processed cocoa mixes loaded with sugar, unsweetened cacao powder is naturally rich in antioxidants called flavonoids, which help fight oxidative stress in the body. Cacao also provides magnesium, iron, fiber, and plant compounds that support heart health and brain function.

Ingredient Notes

I love using frozen strawberries and banana because they naturally sweeten the smoothie while adding fiber and vitamin C. Hemp hearts contribute healthy omega-3 fats, cacao powder provides rich chocolate flavor, and a clean protein powder helps keep this smoothie satisfying enough for breakfast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this chocolate protein shake dairy-free?

Absolutely! Simply use your favorite dairy-free milk, such as hazelnut, almond, or oat milk.

Can I use fresh fruit instead of frozen?

Yes. If your fruit isn’t frozen, add about 1 cup of ice to keep the shake thick and creamy.

What’s the best protein powder?

I prefer a simple protein powder made with minimal ingredients and no artificial sweeteners. Rice, pea, or hemp protein all work well in this recipe. You can also use a clean grass fed protein, our favorite is Naked Whey.
