Homemade Popcorn

Yum! Homemade, fresh popcorn!

Tastes so much better than microwavable.

We totally grew up on the bag you throw in the microwave. However, the liner of the bag is made with chemicals that leach into the popcorn…and then your body. These chemicals are known as perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA. PFOA’s are linked to cancers, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and thyroid disease. I personally have always struggled with borderline hypothyroidism and am always looking for ways to find balance.

In addition to these chemicals, corn is unfortunately a genetically modified food. To avoid this, search for organic or heirloom corn.

Thankfully, there are healthier popcorn bags these days! A few to name are Quinn, Jolly Time, and Newman’s Own Organics. We occasionally purchase these but I still prefer the taste of homemade, popcorn. It’s just so crazy easy to make and a super fresh taste!

Health Benefits of Popcorn:

Quality popcorn is actually healthy!

Popcorn contains phenolic acids which are an antioxidant that fights free radicals in the body. The grain is also known to lower the risk of diabetes and lower heart diseases. If you add ground turmeric on top, this snack easily becomes an even greater anti-inflammatory treat!

Where to buy:

Look for unrefined coconut oil at your local grocery store.

We like to buy organic corn kernels here.

To Make:

In a medium to large pot, add coconut oil over high heat.

Add in kernels and place lid on top.

Watch as the kernels start to pop into popcorn!

Remove from the heat when you begin to hear longer spacing between pops to not burn the bottom.

Add to a large bowl and eat as is or top with your favorite toppings!
