Healthy hot cacao! Or really, hot chocolate, just made with ingredients that are healthy.

My kids love this warm, bedtime drink. “Hot chocolate! Hot chocolate!” They yell in anticipation over receiving this warm, chocolatey drink topped with marshmallows. They’re happy and I am happy because I know they’re getting a rich dose of magnesium and healthy fats right before bed. We don’t drink this every night, but you totally could. We usually have this as a treat, or when mama is not overly exhausted from the day.

This hot chocolate is nourishing and soothing to the body. Rich in vitamins, minerals, satiating fats and the only sweetness comes from raw honey! Does hot chocolate bring back childhood memories for you? Christmas? A cold winter day? For me, I think of ski slopes as a kid, sitting with my family on the side of a mountain, watching the skiiers ski by, with a cold nose and a warm cup of hot chocolate.

Health Benefits:

  • Raw cacao-raw cacao is cocoa in its raw, unprocessed form. Cocoa powder is heated to high temperatures, while cacao is not, which means it keeps all its nutrients intact! Rich in flavanoids and magnesium, cacao aids in digestion, lowers heart disease risks, fights inflammation and calms the body. I have also found that the high levels of magnesium in cacao helps with morning sickness in pregnancy!
  • Raw milk-I like to use raw milk in this recipe, but you can easily sub for your favorite milk! I have also used almond milk and really enjoyed that version. What I love about raw milk from a reputible farm is that the milk is unpasturized and non-homogenized. The nutrients and enzymes are not heated to death and the body knows how to better process the creamy milk in its raw form.
  • Raw honey-rich in enzymes, antioxidants and antibacterial/antifungal properties!
  • Raw…okay just kidding, no more raw ingredients ๐Ÿ™‚

To make:

In a small saucepan, warm up milk, vanilla and cacao.

Mix swiftly to combine

Remove from heat and stir in raw honey to taste.

Top with marshmallows!
