Homemade Popcorn

Homemade Popcorn — Simple, Fresh & Better Than the Bag
There’s something so good about popcorn made from scratch. It’s fresh, warm, and crunchy — and honestly, it tastes better than that bag from the microwave. I grew up on microwave popcorn, but now I choose homemade most of the time. Not only do you avoid the chemicals found in many bagged versions, but homemade popcorn also gives you the chance to control the ingredients and seasonings.
Why It’s Worth Making at Home
Popcorn kernels are a whole grain snack that can be healthy and satisfying when popped the right way. It’s high in fiber, can be fun for movie nights, and you can customize it however your family likes.
(Plus — the smell of fresh popcorn popping never gets old.)

Health & Ingredient Notes
- Skip the chemicals: Many microwave bags are lined with questionable chemicals that can leach into the popcorn itself — something I personally try to avoid.
- Choose organic heirloom or non-GMO kernels when possible for better quality and peace of mind.
- Use unrefined oil that warms well at popping temperature (like coconut or olive oil).
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons unrefined coconut oil
- 1/3 cup popcorn kernels
- Optional toppings:
- A pinch of sea salt or pink Himalayan salt
- Melted grass-fed butter
- Nutritional yeast
- Ground turmeric for a little anti-inflammatory boost

How to Make It
- Heat the oil. In a medium-to-large pot, warm the coconut or olive oil over medium-high heat.
- Add the kernels. Once hot, add the popcorn kernels and cover with a tight-fitting lid.
- Listen for pops. Shake the pot gently now and then so kernels don’t burn — you’ll start to hear popping within minutes.
- Finish popping. When the popping slows (a few seconds between pops), remove the pot from the heat so the bottom doesn’t scorch.
- Season & enjoy. Pour into a big bowl and sprinkle with your favorite toppings. Toss lightly to coat and dig in!
Flavor Ideas
Here are a few simple ways to give your popcorn a little extra nudge:
- Classic butter + salt
- Paprika + black pepper
- Nutritional yeast for a cheesy vibe
- Turmeric + black pepper for an antioxidant kick
- A light drizzle of olive oil and fine sea salt for a fresh, clean taste
Final Thoughts
Homemade popcorn is one of those snacks that’s so easy once you get the hang of it. It’s great for movie night, an afternoon crunch, or a simple treat when you just want something warm and satisfying. Give it a try — I think you’ll love it as much as we do 🤍
